The high priest then stood up and said to Him, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You? ”

When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene! ”

and saying, “The One who would demolish the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross! ”

So he threw the silver into the sanctuary and departed. Then he went and hanged himself.

“We heard Him say, ‘I will demolish this sanctuary made by human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’ ”

Those who passed by were yelling insults at Him, shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! The One who would demolish the sanctuary and build it in three days,

They began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is the Messiah, a King.”

We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man — we don’t know where He’s from! ”

Then also, some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him. Some said, “What is this pseudo-intellectual trying to say? ” Others replied, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities” — because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the Resurrection.

“This man,” they said, “persuades people to worship God contrary to the law! ”

They listened to him up to this word. Then they raised their voices, shouting, “Wipe this person off the earth — it’s a disgrace for him to live! ”
