On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he gave a feast for all his servants. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.

The king held a great banquet for all his officials and staff. It was Esther’s banquet. He freed his provinces from tax payments and gave gifts worthy of the king’s bounty.

For Herod had arrested John, chained him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,

So he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.

“Teacher, Moses said, if a man dies, having no children, his brother is to marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.

King Herod heard of this, because Jesus’ name had become well known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that’s why supernatural powers are at work in him.”

For Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married.

So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not,

Then He commanded them: “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”

At that time some Pharisees came and told Him, “Go, get out of here! Herod wants to kill You! ”

Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt, mocked Him, dressed Him in a brilliant robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.

Finding that He was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days.

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, while Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him about Herodias, his brother’s wife, and about all the evil things Herod had done,

Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward; Susanna; and many others who were supporting them from their possessions.

About that time King Herod cruelly attacked some who belonged to the church,

“For, in fact, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed,
