They answered, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back.”
Look, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome Day of the Lord comes.
“This is John the Baptist! ” he told his servants. “He has been raised from the dead, and that’s why supernatural powers are at work in him.”
In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Wilderness of Judea
King Herod heard of this, because Jesus’ name had become well known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that’s why supernatural powers are at work in him.”
But others said, “He’s Elijah.” Still others said, “He’s a prophet — like one of the prophets.”
While He was praying in private and His disciples were with Him, He asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am? ”
“But you,” He asked them, “who do you say that I am? ” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah! ”
“What then? ” they asked him. “Are you Elijah? ” “I am not,” he said. “Are you the Prophet? ” “No,” he answered.
So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet? ”
When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, “This really is the Prophet! ”
Again they asked the blind man, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes? ” “He’s a prophet,” he said.
