Then Elisha stared steadily at him until Hazael was ashamed. The man of God wept,

My eyes pour out streams of tears because people do not follow Your instruction.

I have seen the disloyal and feel disgust because they do not keep Your word.

Rage seizes me because of the wicked who reject Your instruction.

Therefore I said, “Look away from me! Let me weep bitterly! Do not try to comfort me about the destruction of my dear people.”

For the Lord will rise up as He did at Mount Perazim. He will rise in wrath, as at the Valley of Gibeon, to do His work, His strange work, and to perform His task, His disturbing task.

But if you will not listen, my innermost being will weep in secret because of your pride. My eyes will overflow with tears, for the Lord’s flock has been taken captive.

But I have not run away from being Your shepherd, and I have not longed for the fatal day. You know my words were spoken in Your presence.

If my head were a spring of water, my eyes a fountain of tears, I would weep day and night over the slain of my dear people.

How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I surrender you, Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? I have had a change of heart; My compassion is stirred!

saying, “If you knew this day what would bring peace — but now it is hidden from your eyes.
