One Sabbath, when He went to eat at the house of one of the leading Pharisees, they were watching Him closely.

The wicked one lies in wait for the righteous and seeks to kill him;

When one of them comes to visit, he speaks deceitfully; he stores up evil in his heart; he goes out and talks.

They watched closely and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, so they could catch Him in what He said, to hand Him over to the governor’s rule and authority.

The scribes and Pharisees were watching Him closely, to see if He would heal on the Sabbath, so that they could find a charge against Him.

There was a man from the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

A Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was respected by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered the men to be taken outside for a little while.
