Be miserable and mourn and weep. Your laughter must change to mourning and your joy to sorrow.

Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to all of them, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the law.

My lyre is used for mourning and my flute for the sound of weeping.

My eyes pour out streams of tears because people do not follow Your instruction.

Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word.

It was good for me to be afflicted so that I could learn Your statutes.

Even in laughter a heart may be sad, and joy may end in grief.

Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.

so that when I make atonement for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth again because of your disgrace.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

The survivors among them will escape and live on the mountains like doves of the valley, all of them moaning, each over his own iniquity.

“He will completely destroy those terrible men,” they told Him, “and lease his vineyard to other farmers who will give him his produce at the harvest.”

Those who mourn are blessed, for they will be comforted.

“ ‘Son,’ Abraham said, ‘remember that during your life you received your good things, just as Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here, while you are in agony.

You who are now hungry are blessed, because you will be filled. You who now weep are blessed, because you will laugh.

Woe to you who are now full, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are now laughing, for you will mourn and weep.
