For 40 years I was disgusted with that generation; I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray; they do not know My ways.”

So the Lord relented concerning the disaster He said He would bring on His people.

If only you had paid attention to My commands. Then your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.

But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit. So He became their enemy and fought against them.

At one moment I might announce concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will uproot, tear down, and destroy it.

Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all the people of Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the Lord and plead for the Lord’s favor, and did not the Lord relent concerning the disaster He had pronounced against them? We are about to bring great harm on ourselves! ”

Tell them: As I live” — the declaration of the Lord God — “I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked person should turn from his way and live. Repent, repent of your evil ways! Why will you die, house of Israel?

How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I surrender you, Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? I have had a change of heart; My compassion is stirred!

Tear your hearts, not just your clothes, and return to the Lord your God. For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, rich in faithful love, and He relents from sending disaster.

Then God saw their actions — that they had turned from their evil ways — so God relented from the disaster He had threatened to do to them. And He did not do it.

“Because I, Yahweh, have not changed, you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed.

God is not a man who lies, or a son of man who changes His mind. Does He speak and not act, or promise and not fulfill?

since God’s gracious gifts and calling are irrevocable.

And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by Him for the day of redemption.

If only they were wise, they would figure it out; they would understand their fate.

The Lord will indeed vindicate His people and have compassion on His servants when He sees that their strength is gone and no one is left — slave or free.

If only they had such a heart to fear Me and keep all My commands always, so that they and their children will prosper forever.

for 40 years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation and said, “They always go astray in their hearts, and they have not known My ways.”

And who was He provoked with for 40 years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights; with Him there is no variation or shadow cast by turning.

“I regret that I made Saul king, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My instructions.” So Samuel became angry and cried out to the Lord all night.

Furthermore, the Eternal One of Israel does not lie or change His mind, for He is not man who changes his mind.”

Even to the day of his death, Samuel never again visited Saul. Samuel mourned for Saul, and the Lord regretted He had made Saul king over Israel.
