But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth. I afflicted my soul with fasting. My prayer returned into my own bosom.

Didn't I weep for him who was in trouble? Wasn't my soul grieved for the needy?

Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.

Why have we fasted, [say they], and you don't see? [why] have we afflicted our soul, and you take no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast you find [your own] pleasure, and exact all your labors.

Is such the fast that I have chosen? the day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

*It shall be a statute to you forever: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and shall do no manner of work, the native-born, or the stranger who lives as a foreigner among you:

It is a Shabbat of solemn rest to you, and you shall afflict your souls; it is a statute forever.

If the household is worthy, let your shalom come on it, but if it isn't worthy, let your shalom return to you.

But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,

If a son of shalom is there, your shalom will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.
