When the Perushim saw it, they said to his talmidim, *Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?*

The scribes and the Perushim, when they saw that he was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, said to his talmidim, *Why is it that he eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?*

(For the Perushim, and all the Judeans, don't eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to the tradition of the elders.

He asked the scribes, *What are you asking them?*

The Parush stood and prayed to himself like this: 'God, I thank you, that I am not like the rest of men, extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

When they saw it, they all murmured, saying, *He has gone in to lodge with a man who is a sinner.*

It happened on one of those days, that he was teaching; and there were Perushim and teachers of the Torah sitting by, who had come out of every village of the Galil, Yehudah, and Yerushalayim. The power of the Lord was with him to heal them.

The scribes and the Perushim began to reason, saying, *Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?*

The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man, and a drunkard; a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'

Now when the Parush who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, *This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what kind of woman this is who touches him, that she is a sinner.*

A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Perushim part stood up, and contended, saying, *We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let's not fight against God!*
