Yosef also went up from the Galil, out of the city of Natzeret, into Yehudah, to the city of David, which is called Beit-Lechem, because he was of the house and family of David;
As for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died by me in the land of Kena`an in the way, when there was still some distance to come to Efrat, and I buried her there in the way to Efrat (the same is Beit-Lechem).*
But you, Beit-Lechem Efratah, being small among the clans of Yehudah, out of you one will come forth to me that is to be ruler in Yisra'el; whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.
But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, *Yosef, son of David, don't be afraid to take to yourself Miriam, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
So they two went until they came to Beit-Lechem. It happened, when they were come to Beit-Lechem, that all the city was moved about them, and [the women] said, Is this Na`omi 1?
All the people who were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman who has come into your house like Rachel and like Le'ah, which two built the house of Yisra'el: and do you worthily in Efratah, and be famous in Beit-Lechem:
The women her neighbors gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Na`omi 1; and they named him `Oved 1: he is the father of Yishai, the father of David.
The LORD said to Shemu'el, How long will you mourn for Sha'ul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Yisra'el? fill your horn with oil, and go: I will send you to Yishai the Beit-Hallachmite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.
Now David was the son of that Efratite of Beit-Lechem-Yehudah, whose name was Yishai; and he had eight sons: and the man was an old man in the days of Sha'ul, stricken [in years] among men.
If your father miss me at all, then say, 'David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Beit-Lechem his city; for it is the yearly sacrifice there for all the family.'
