in the cave that is in the field of Makhpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Kena`an, which Avraham bought with the field from `Efron the Chittite as a burial place.
The field, and the cave that is in it, were deeded to Avraham for a possession of a burying place by the children of Chet.
Avraham rose up from before his dead, and spoke to the children of Chet, saying,
*I am a stranger and a foreigner living with you. Give me a possession of a burying-place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.*
Yitzchak and Yishma'el, his sons, buried him in the cave of Makhpelah, in the field of `Efron, the son of Tzochar the Chittite, which is before Mamre,
