Zephaniah 2:8

Good News Translation

The Lord Almighty says, “I have heard the people of Moab and Ammon insulting and taunting my people, and boasting that they would seize their land.

The older daughter had a son, whom she named Moab. He was the ancestor of the present-day Moabites.

The younger daughter also had a son, whom she named Benammi. He was the ancestor of the present-day Ammonites.

This is a message about Moab. The cities of Ar and Kir are destroyed in a single night, and silence covers the land of Moab.

The people of Judah say, “We have heard how proud the people of Moab are. We know that they are arrogant and conceited, but their boasts are empty.”

The Lord says, “I have something to say about Israel's neighbors who have ruined the land I gave to my people Israel. I will take those wicked people away from their countries like an uprooted plant, and I will rescue Judah from them.

“You have heard them insult me, O Lord; you know all their plots.

“Mortal man, prophesy. Announce what I, the Sovereign Lord, am saying to the Ammonites, who are insulting Israel. Say to them: ‘A sword is ready to destroy; It is polished to kill, to flash like lightning.

Then you will know that I, the Lord, heard you say with contempt that the mountains of Israel were desolate and that they were yours to devour.

the Sovereign Lord, have for them: Israel's enemies gloated and said, ‘Now those ancient hills are ours!’

The Lord says, “The people of Ammon have sinned again and again, and for this I will certainly punish them. In their wars for more territory they even ripped open pregnant women in Gilead.

The Lord says, “The people of Moab have sinned again and again, and for this I will certainly punish them. They dishonored the bones of the king of Edom by burning them to ashes.

That is how the people of Moab and Ammon will be punished for their pride and arrogance and for insulting the people of the Lord Almighty.

The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have removed from you the disgrace of being slaves in Egypt.” That is why the place was named Gilgal, the name it still has.
