Zephaniah 1:18

Good News Translation

On the day when the Lord shows his fury, not even all their silver and gold will save them. The whole earth will be destroyed by the fire of his anger. He will put an end—a sudden end—to everyone who lives on earth.

The people of Judah sinned against the Lord and did more to arouse his anger against them than all their ancestors had done.

On the day God is angry and punishes, it is the wicked who are always spared.

Then I would be sleeping like princes who filled their houses with gold and silver,

They angered him with their heathen places of worship, and with their idols they made him furious.

Lord, will you be angry with us forever? Will your anger continue to burn like fire?

Riches will do you no good on the day you face death, but honesty can save your life.

Rich people, however, imagine that their wealth protects them like high, strong walls around a city.

So now, listen to what the Lord Almighty, Israel's powerful God, is saying: “I will take revenge on you, my enemies, and you will cause me no more trouble.

God, the light of Israel, will become a fire. Israel's holy God will become a flame, which in a single day will burn up everything, even the thorns and thistles.

What will you do when God punishes you? What will you do when he brings disaster on you from a distant country? Where will you run to find help? Where will you hide your wealth?

And so I, the Sovereign Lord, will pour out my fierce anger on this Temple. I will pour it out on people and animals alike, and even on the trees and the crops. My anger will be like a fire that no one can put out.

The land will become a desert. In the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem I will put an end to the sounds of joy and gladness and to the happy sounds of wedding feasts.

The Lord says, “I will make Jerusalem a pile of ruins, a place where jackals live; the cities of Judah will become a desert, a place where no one lives.”

I will condemn you for adultery and murder, and in my anger and fury I will punish you with death.

Because I am angry with you, I will let them deal with you in their anger. They will cut off your nose and your ears and kill your children. Yes, they will take your sons and daughters from you and burn them alive.

Violence produces more wickedness. Nothing of theirs will remain, nothing of their wealth, their splendor, or their glory.

They will throw their gold and silver away in the streets like garbage, because neither silver nor gold can save them when the Lord pours out his fury. They cannot use it to satisfy their desires or fill their stomachs. Gold and silver led them into sin.

This is what the Sovereign Lord is saying: “One disaster after another is coming on you.

Wail and cry when you hear this, you that live in the lower part of the city, because all the merchants will be dead!

It will be a day of fury, a day of trouble and distress, a day of ruin and destruction, a day of darkness and gloom, a black and cloudy day,

before you are driven away like chaff blown by the wind, before the burning anger of the Lord comes upon you, before the day when he shows his fury.

“Just wait,” the Lord says. “Wait for the day when I rise to accuse the nations. I have made up my mind to gather nations and kingdoms in order to let them feel the force of my anger. The whole earth will be destroyed by the fire of my fury.

Will you gain anything if you win the whole world but lose your life? Of course not! There is nothing you can give to regain your life.

Or do we want to make the Lord jealous? Do we think that we are stronger than he?

When that happens, I will become angry with them; I will abandon them, and they will be destroyed. Many terrible disasters will come upon them, and then they will realize that these things are happening to them because I, their God, am no longer with them.
