The Lord says, “The people of Israel are as dishonest as the Canaanites; they love to cheat their customers with false scales.

“Be honest and just when you make decisions in legal cases; do not show favoritism to the poor or fear the rich.

Instead, let justice flow like a stream, and righteousness like a river that never goes dry.

No, the Lord has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God.

This is what the Lord said through the earlier prophets at the time when Jerusalem was prosperous and filled with people and when there were many people living not only in the towns around the city but also in the southern region and in the western foothills.

The Lord gave this message to Zechariah:

“How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You give to God one tenth even of the seasoning herbs, such as mint, dill, and cumin, but you neglect to obey the really important teachings of the Law, such as justice and mercy and honesty. These you should practice, without neglecting the others.

“How terrible for you Pharisees! You give to God one tenth of the seasoning herbs, such as mint and rue and all the other herbs, but you neglect justice and love for God. These you should practice, without neglecting the others.

Stop judging by external standards, and judge by true standards.”

“According to our Law we cannot condemn people before hearing them and finding out what they have done.”

“If you see an Israelite's cow or sheep running loose, do not ignore it; take it back.
