You have given us sorrow to eat, a large cup of tears to drink.

I have no appetite for food like that, and everything I eat makes me sick.

Because of your anger and fury, ashes are my food, and my tears are mixed with my drink. You picked me up and threw me away.

Day and night I cry, and tears are my only food; all the time my enemies ask me, “Where is your God?”

Why have you abandoned us like this, O God? Will you be angry with your own people forever?

Lord, will you be angry with us forever? Will your anger continue to burn like fire?

The Lord will make you go through hard times, but he himself will be there to teach you, and you will not have to search for him any more.

“You pursued us and killed us; your mercy was hidden by your anger,

By a cloud of fury too thick for our prayers to get through.
