Good News Translation

The Lord controls the mind of a king as easily as he directs the course of a stream.

He will go back by the same road he came, without entering this city. I, the Lord, have spoken.

In the first year that Cyrus of Persia was emperor, the Lord made what he had said through the prophet Jeremiah come true. He prompted Cyrus to issue the following command and send it out in writing to be read aloud everywhere in his empire:

“This is the command of Cyrus, Emperor of Persia. The Lord, the God of Heaven, has made me ruler over the whole world and has given me the responsibility of building a temple for him in Jerusalem in Judah.

For seven days they joyfully celebrated the Festival of Unleavened Bread. They were full of joy because the Lord had made the emperor of Assyria favorable to them, so that he supported them in their work of rebuilding the Temple of the God of Israel.

Listen now to my prayer and to the prayers of all your other servants who want to honor you. Give me success today and make the emperor merciful to me.” In those days I was the emperor's wine steward.

The emperor asked, “What is it that you want?” I prayed to the God of Heaven,

I asked also for a letter to Asaph, keeper of the royal forests, instructing him to supply me with timber for the gates of the fort that guards the Temple, for the city walls, and for the house I was to live in. The emperor gave me all I asked for, because God was with me.

The king liked her more than any of the other women, and more than any of the others she won his favor and affection. He placed the royal crown on her head and made her queen in place of Vashti.

He made the Egyptians hate his people and treat his servants with deceit.

He made all their oppressors feel sorry for them.

The Red Sea looked and ran away; the Jordan River stopped flowing.

What happened, Sea, to make you run away? And you, O Jordan, why did you stop flowing?

You made springs and fountains flow; you dried up large rivers.

The Lord rules supreme in heaven, greater than the roar of the ocean, more powerful than the waves of the sea.

But I will make the king stubborn, and he will not listen to you, no matter how many terrifying things I do in Egypt. Then I will bring severe punishment on Egypt and lead the tribes of my people out of the land.

We may make our plans, but God has the last word.

You may make your plans, but God directs your actions.

The Lord has determined our path; how then can anyone understand the direction his own life is taking?

Watch for the new thing I am going to do. It is happening already—you can see it now! I will make a road through the wilderness and give you streams of water there.

With a word of command I dry up the ocean.

“Go and find Jeremiah and take good care of him. Do not harm him, but do for him whatever he wants.”

He looks on the people of the earth as nothing; angels in heaven and people on earth are under his control. No one can oppose his will or question what he does.

and brought him safely through all his troubles. When Joseph appeared before the king of Egypt, God gave him a pleasing manner and wisdom, and the king made Joseph governor over the country and the royal household.

Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great Euphrates River. The river dried up, to provide a way for the kings who come from the east.

Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and the springs of water, and they turned into blood.
