But Jacob said to his mother, “You know that Esau is a hairy man, but I have smooth skin.

Esau hated Jacob, because his father had given Jacob the blessing. He thought, “The time to mourn my father's death is near; then I will kill Jacob.”

May my enemies be covered with disgrace; may they wear their shame like a robe.

I will cover his enemies with shame, but his kingdom will prosper and flourish.”

Remember, Lord, what the Edomites did the day Jerusalem was captured. Remember how they kept saying, “Tear it down to the ground!”

It is for your sake that I have been insulted and that I am covered with shame.

You have made him old before his time and covered him with disgrace.

Good people will receive blessings. The words of the wicked hide a violent nature.

If you make fun of poor people, you insult the God who made them. You will be punished if you take pleasure in someone's misfortune.

The Lord says, “I have something to say about Israel's neighbors who have ruined the land I gave to my people Israel. I will take those wicked people away from their countries like an uprooted plant, and I will rescue Judah from them.

We should lie down in shame and let our disgrace cover us. We and our ancestors have always sinned against the Lord our God; we have never obeyed his commands.”

I myself have sworn that the city of Bozrah will become a horrifying sight and a desert; people will make fun of it and use its name as a curse. All the nearby villages will be in ruins forever. I, the Lord, have spoken.”

You say, ‘We've been disgraced and made ashamed; we feel completely helpless because foreigners have taken over the holy places in the Temple.’

Laugh on, people of Edom and Uz; be glad while you can. Your disaster is coming too; you too will stagger naked in shame.

Zion has paid for her sin; the Lord will not keep us in exile any longer. But Edom, the Lord will punish you; he will expose your guilty acts.

I will make you desolate forever, and no one will live in your cities again. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

They will put on sackcloth and they will tremble all over. Their heads will be shaved, and they will all be disgraced.

“Egypt will become a desert, and Edom a ruined waste, because they attacked the land of Judah and killed its innocent people.

The Lord says, “The people of Edom have sinned again and again, and for this I will certainly punish them. They hunted down their relatives, the Israelites, and showed them no mercy. Their anger had no limits, and they never let it die.

Then our enemies will see this and be disgraced—the same enemies who taunted us by asking, “Where is the Lord your God?” We will see them defeated, trampled down like mud in the streets.

“Do not despise the Edomites; they are your relatives. And do not despise the Egyptians; you once lived in their land.

From the third generation onward their descendants may be included among the Lord's people.
