The Edomites repeated, “We refuse!” and they marched out with a powerful army to attack the people of Israel.

Esau hated Jacob, because his father had given Jacob the blessing. He thought, “The time to mourn my father's death is near; then I will kill Jacob.”

When the messengers came back to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and he is already on his way to meet you. He has four hundred men with him.”

When I speak of peace, they are for war.

The Lord says, “The people of Edom have sinned again and again, and for this I will certainly punish them. They hunted down their relatives, the Israelites, and showed them no mercy. Their anger had no limits, and they never let it die.

But the Edomites answered, “We refuse to let you pass through our country! If you try, we will march out and attack you.”

Because the Edomites would not let the Israelites pass through their territory, the Israelites turned and went another way.

Then they sent messengers to the king of Edom to ask permission to go through his land. But the king of Edom would not let them. They also asked the king of Moab, but neither would he let them go through his land. So the Israelites stayed at Kadesh.

But Sihon would not let Israel do it. He brought his whole army together, camped at Jahaz, and attacked Israel.
