Numbers 17:10

Good News Translation

The Lord said to Moses, “Put Aaron's stick back in front of the Covenant Box. It is to be kept as a warning to the rebel Israelites that they will die unless their complaining stops.”

I am surrounded by enemies, who are like lions hungry for human flesh. Their teeth are like spears and arrows; their tongues are like sharp swords.

Moses said, “The Lord has commanded us to save some manna, to be kept for our descendants, so that they can see the food which he gave us to eat in the desert when he brought us out of Egypt.”

As the Lord had commanded Moses, Aaron put it in front of the Covenant Box, so that it could be kept.

The Lord said, “Earth and sky, listen to what I am saying! The children I brought up have rebelled against me.

The Lord says, “The people of Israel have not stopped sinning against me since the time of their sin at Gibeah. So at Gibeah war will catch up with them.

Then Moses and Aaron bowed to the ground in front of all the people.

“Move back from these people, and I will destroy them immediately.”

They became holy when they were presented at the Lord's altar. So take the fire pans of these who were put to death for their sin, beat them into thin plates, and make a covering for the altar. It will be a warning to the people of Israel.”

This was a warning to the Israelites that no one who was not a descendant of Aaron should come to the altar to burn incense for the Lord. Otherwise he would be destroyed like Korah and his men. All this was done as the Lord had commanded Eleazar through Moses.

Moses did as the Lord commanded.

Take them to the Tent of my presence and put them in front of the Covenant Box, where I meet you.

Moses took all the sticks and showed them to the Israelites. They saw what had happened, and each leader took his own stick back.

Moses went and got the stick, as the Lord had commanded.

“Do not let the clan of Kohath

We must not complain, as some of them did—and they were destroyed by the Angel of Death.

Do not let anyone deceive you with foolish words; it is because of these very things that God's anger will come upon those who do not obey him.

Ever since I have known you, you have rebelled against the Lord.

“Never forget how you made the Lord your God angry in the desert. From the day that you left Egypt until the day you arrived here, you have rebelled against him.

In it were the gold altar for the burning of incense and the Covenant Box all covered with gold and containing the gold jar with the manna in it, Aaron's stick that had sprouted leaves, and the two stone tablets with the commandments written on them.

The sons of Eli were scoundrels. They paid no attention to the Lord

But some mean and worthless men who had gone with David said, “They didn't go with us, and so we won't give them any of the loot. They can take their wives and children and go away.”
