Some wandered in the trackless desert and could not find their way to a city to live in.

he showed contempt for their oppressors and made them wander in trackless deserts.

So he ended their days like a breath and their lives with sudden disaster.

People of Israel, stop celebrating your festivals like pagans. You have turned away from your God and have been unfaithful to him. All over the land you have sold yourselves like prostitutes to the god Baal and have loved the grain you thought he paid you with!

The Lord became angry with the people and made them wander in the wilderness forty years until that whole generation that had displeased him was dead.

At the command of the Lord, Aaron the priest climbed Mount Hor. At the age of 123 he died there on the first day of the fifth month of the fortieth year after the Israelites had left Egypt.

The husband shall be free of guilt, but the woman, if guilty, must suffer the consequences.

He led the people out of Egypt, performing miracles and wonders in Egypt and at the Red Sea and for forty years in the desert.

On the first day of the eleventh month of the fortieth year after they had left Egypt, Moses told the people everything the Lord had commanded him to tell them.

This was thirty-eight years after we had left Kadesh Barnea. All the fighting men of that generation had died, as the Lord had said they would.

“Remember how the Lord your God has blessed you in everything that you have done. He has taken care of you as you wandered through this vast desert. He has been with you these forty years, and you have had everything you needed.

For forty years the Lord led you through the desert, and your clothes and sandals never wore out.

Remember how the Lord your God led you on this long journey through the desert these past forty years, sending hardships to test you, so that he might know what you intended to do and whether you would obey his commands.

During these forty years your clothes have not worn out, nor have your feet swollen up.

But now, look. It has been forty-five years since the Lord said that to Moses. That was when Israel was going through the desert, and the Lord, as he promised, has kept me alive ever since. Look at me! I am eighty-five years old
