Good News Translation

The people of Judah had a song they sang: “We grow weak carrying burdens; There's so much rubble to take away. How can we build the wall today?”

He assigned 70,000 of them to transport materials and 80,000 to cut stones in the mountains, and appointed 3,600 supervisors to make sure the work was done.

Other Levites were in charge of transporting materials and supervising the workers on various jobs, and others kept records or served as guards.

Our enemies thought we would not see them or know what was happening until they were already upon us, killing us and putting an end to our work.

In front of his companions and the Samaritan troops he said, “What do these miserable Jews think they're doing? Do they intend to rebuild the city? Do they think that by offering sacrifices they can finish the work in one day? Can they make building stones out of heaps of burnt rubble?”

The Lord Almighty said to Haggai, “These people say that this is not the right time to rebuild the Temple.”

But the men who had gone with Caleb said, “No, we are not strong enough to attack them; the people there are more powerful than we are.”

They went as far as Eshcol Valley and saw the land, but when they returned, they discouraged the people from entering the land which the Lord had given them.
