Nehemiah 11:1

Good News Translation

The leaders settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people drew lots to choose one family out of every ten to go and live in the holy city of Jerusalem, while the rest were to live in the other cities and towns.

Each family, regardless of size, drew lots to see which gate it would be responsible for.

These were the ancestral heads of families and their principal descendants who lived in Jerusalem.

All the people of Israel were listed according to their families, and this information was recorded in The Book of the Kings of Israel. The people of Judah had been deported to Babylon as punishment for their sins.

The first to return to their property in the cities included Israelite citizens, priests, Levites, and Temple workers.

People from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh went to live in Jerusalem.

We, the people, priests, and Levites, will draw lots each year to determine which clans are to provide wood to burn the sacrifices offered to the Lord our God, according to the requirements of the Law.

In all, 284 Levites lived in the holy city of Jerusalem. Akkub, Talmon, and their relatives, 172 in all.

During this time I told the men in charge that they and all their helpers had to stay in Jerusalem at night, so that we could guard the city at night as well as work in the daytime.

Here the kings of Israel sat to judge their people.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you prosper.

People cast lots to learn God's will, but God himself determines the answer.

And yet you are proud to say that you are citizens of the holy city and that you depend on Israel's God, whose name is the Lord Almighty.

Jerusalem, be strong and great again! Holy city of God, clothe yourself with splendor! The heathen will never enter your gates again.

They left the graves, and after Jesus rose from death, they went into the Holy City, where many people saw them.

Then the Devil took Jesus to Jerusalem, the Holy City, set him on the highest point of the Temple,

Then they prayed, “Lord, you know the thoughts of everyone, so show us which of these two you have chosen

Then they drew lots to choose between the two men, and the one chosen was Matthias, who was added to the group of eleven apostles.

Joshua drew lots to consult the Lord for them, and assigned each of the remaining tribes of Israel a certain part of the land.
