Good News Translation

The Lord God tolerates no rivals; he punishes those who oppose him. In his anger he pays them back.

Let them eat all they want! God will punish them in fury and anger.

Lord, you are a God who punishes; reveal your anger!

Do not bow down to any idol or worship it, because I am the Lord your God and I tolerate no rivals. I bring punishment on those who hate me and on their descendants down to the third and fourth generation.

“Do not worship any other god, because I, the Lord, tolerate no rivals.

I keep my promise for thousands of generations and forgive evil and sin; but I will not fail to punish children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation for the sins of their parents.”

The Lord goes out to fight like a warrior; he is ready and eager for battle. He gives a war cry, a battle shout; he shows his power against his enemies.

Jerusalem, wake up! Rouse yourself and get up! You have drunk the cup of punishment that the Lord in his anger gave you to drink; you drank it down, and it made you stagger.

At the corner of every street your people collapse from weakness; they are like deer caught in a hunter's net. They have felt the force of God's anger.

The Lord will come with fire. He will ride on the wings of a storm to punish those he is angry with.

The Lord, the God of Israel, said to me, “Here is a wine cup filled with my anger. Take it to all the nations to whom I send you, and make them drink from it.

The prophets who spoke long ago, before my time and yours, predicted that war, starvation, and disease would come to many nations and powerful kingdoms.

You won't always be angry; you won't be mad at me forever.’ Israel, that is what you said, but you did all the evil you could.”

Perhaps they will pray to the Lord and turn from their evil ways, because the Lord has threatened this people with his terrible anger and fury.”

Keep your covenant with me, your Lord, and dedicate yourselves to me, you people of Judah and Jerusalem. If you don't, my anger will burn like fire because of the evil things you have done. It will burn, and there will be no one to put it out.”

Raise the war cry all around the city! Now Babylon has surrendered. Its walls have been broken through and torn down. I am taking my revenge on the Babylonians. So take your revenge on them, and treat them as they have treated others.

The Lord turned loose the full force of his fury; he lit a fire in Zion that burned it to the ground.

“So prophesy to the land of Israel; tell the mountains, hills, brooks, and valleys what I, the Sovereign Lord, am saying in jealous anger because of the way the nations have insulted and humiliated them.

The Sovereign Lord says, “On the day when Gog invades Israel, I will become furious.

I declare in the heat of my anger that on that day there will be a severe earthquake in the land of Israel.

The Sovereign Lord said, “But now I will be merciful to Jacob's descendants, the people of Israel, and make them prosperous again. I will protect my holy name.

“You will feel all the force of my anger and rage until I am satisfied. When all this happens, you will be convinced that I, the Lord, have spoken to you because I am outraged at your unfaithfulness.

Those far away will get sick and die; those nearby will be killed in war; those who survive will starve to death. They will feel all the force of my anger.

They will feel all the force of my anger. I will not spare them or show them any mercy. They will shout prayers to me as loud as they can, but I will not listen to them.”

Then the Lord showed concern for his land; he had mercy on his people.

then in my anger I will turn on you and again make your punishment seven times worse than before.

And in my great anger I will take revenge on all nations that have not obeyed me.”

There is no other god like you, O Lord; you forgive the sins of your people who have survived. You do not stay angry forever, but you take pleasure in showing us your constant love.

and the angel told me to proclaim what the Lord Almighty had said: “I have a deep love and concern for Jerusalem, my holy city,

“I have longed to help Jerusalem because of my deep love for her people, a love which has made me angry with her enemies.

“Because of what Phinehas has done, I am no longer angry with the people of Israel. He refused to tolerate the worship of any god but me, and that is why I did not destroy them in my anger.

Never take revenge, my friends, but instead let God's anger do it. For the scripture says, “I will take revenge, I will pay back, says the Lord.”

because they are God's servants working for your own good. But if you do evil, then be afraid of them, because their power to punish is real. They are God's servants and carry out God's punishment on those who do evil.

because the Lord your God is like a flaming fire; he tolerates no rivals.

but he will not hesitate to punish those who hate him.

For we know who said, “I will take revenge, I will repay”; and who also said, “The Lord will judge his people.”

Joshua said to the people, “But you may not be able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God and will not forgive your sins. He will tolerate no rivals,

And so the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials and how to keep the wicked under punishment for the Day of Judgment,
