Micah 7:2

Good News Translation

There is not an honest person left in the land, no one loyal to God. Everyone is waiting for a chance to commit murder. Everyone hunts down their own people.

they wait in their hiding place like lions. They lie in wait for the poor; they catch them in their traps and drag them away.

Help us, Lord! There is not a good person left; honest people can no longer be found.

All of them lie to one another; they deceive each other with flattery.

My enemies have spread a net to catch me; I am overcome with distress. They dug a pit in my path, but fell into it themselves.

Suppose they say, “Come on; let's find someone to kill! Let's attack some innocent people for the fun of it!

The words of the wicked are murderous, but the words of the righteous rescue those who are threatened.

Everyone will take advantage of everyone else. Young people will not respect their elders, and worthless people will not respect their superiors.

Good people die, and no one understands or even cares. But when they die, no calamity can hurt them.

You are always planning something evil, and you can hardly wait to do it. You never hesitate to murder innocent people. You leave ruin and destruction wherever you go,

Because the Lord Almighty is angry, his punishment burns like a fire throughout the land and destroys the people, and it is each of us for ourselves.

The Lord says, “I am sending for many fishermen to come and catch these people. Then I will send for many hunters to hunt them down on every mountain and hill and in the caves among the rocks.

Their archers are mighty soldiers who kill without mercy.

“Evildoers live among my people; they lie in wait like those who lay nets to catch birds, but they have set their traps to catch people.

I listened carefully, but you did not speak the truth. Not one of you has been sorry for your wickedness; not one of you has asked, ‘What have I done wrong?’ Each of you keep on going your own way, like a horse rushing into battle.

The enemy was watching for us; we could not even walk in the streets. Our days were over; the end had come.

Some of your people murder for pay. Some charge interest on the loans they make to other Israelites and get rich by taking advantage of them. They have forgotten me.” The Sovereign Lord has spoken.

This is what the Sovereign Lord is saying: “The city of murderers is doomed! It is like a corroded pot that is never cleaned. Piece after piece of meat is taken out, and not one is left.

“Listen to this, you priests! Pay attention, people of Israel! Listen, you that belong to the royal family! You are supposed to judge with justice—so judgment will fall on you! You have become a trap at Mizpah, a net spread on Mount Tabor,

The priests are like a gang of robbers who wait in ambush for someone. Even on the road to the holy place at Shechem they commit murder. And they do all this evil deliberately!

The Lord replies, “You attack my people like enemies. Men return from battle, thinking they are safe at home, but there you are, waiting to steal the coats off their backs.

You are building God's city, Jerusalem, on a foundation of murder and injustice.

yet you hate what is good and you love what is evil. You skin my people alive and tear the flesh off their bones.

The Lord said, “I will no longer pity anyone on earth. I myself will put all the people in the power of their rulers. These rulers will devastate the earth, and I will not save it from their power.”)

The Jews joined in the accusation and said that all this was true.

Look, my father, look at the piece of your robe I am holding! I could have killed you, but instead I only cut this off. This should convince you that I have no thought of rebelling against you or of harming you. You are hunting me down to kill me, even though I have not done you any wrong.

Don't let me be killed on foreign soil, away from the Lord. Why should the king of Israel come to kill a flea like me? Why should he hunt me down like a wild bird?”
