The people preach at me and say, “Don't preach at us. Don't preach about all that. God is not going to disgrace us.

All our sacred symbols are gone; there are no prophets left, and no one knows how long this will last.

The Lord has made you drowsy, ready to fall into a deep sleep. The prophets should be the eyes of the people, but God has blindfolded them.

They tell the prophets to keep quiet. They say, “Don't talk to us about what's right. Tell us what we want to hear. Let us keep our illusions.

“Mortal man,” he said, “look toward the south. Speak against the south and prophesy against the forest of the south.

“Mortal man,” he said, “denounce Jerusalem. Denounce the places where people worship. Warn the land of Israel

I will paralyze your tongue so that you won't be able to warn these rebellious people.

But you made the nazirites drink wine, and ordered the prophets not to speak my message.

Don't prophesy here at Bethel any more. This is the king's place of worship, the national temple.”

So now listen to what the Lord says. You tell me to stop prophesying, to stop raving against the people of Israel.

“Prophets, your day is almost over; the sun is going down on you. Because you mislead my people, you will have no more prophetic visions, and you will not be able to predict anything.”

This will happen because you have followed the evil practices of King Omri and of his son, King Ahab. You have continued their policies, and so I will bring you to ruin, and everyone will despise you. People everywhere will treat you with contempt.”

But to keep this matter from spreading any further among the people, let us warn these men never again to speak to anyone in the name of Jesus.”

“We gave you strict orders not to teach in the name of this man,” he said; “but see what you have done! You have spread your teaching all over Jerusalem, and you want to make us responsible for his death!”

They called the apostles in, had them whipped, and ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus; and then they set them free.

“How stubborn you are!” Stephen went on to say. “How heathen your hearts, how deaf you are to God's message! You are just like your ancestors: you too have always resisted the Holy Spirit!
