“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites! They love to stand up and pray in the houses of worship and on the street corners, so that everyone will see them. I assure you, they have already been paid in full.

Listen to my cry for help, my God and king! I pray to you, O Lord;

Morning, noon, and night my complaints and groans go up to him, and he will hear my voice.

The Lord is pleased when good people pray, but hates the sacrifices that the wicked bring him.

The Lord hates everyone who is arrogant; he will never let them escape punishment.

“When you lift your hands in prayer, I will not look at you. No matter how much you pray, I will not listen, for your hands are covered with blood.

Then you will call to me. You will come and pray to me, and I will answer you.

When Daniel learned that the order had been signed, he went home. In an upstairs room of his house there were windows that faced toward Jerusalem. There, just as he had always done, he knelt down at the open windows and prayed to God three times a day.

If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

“How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You lock the door to the Kingdom of heaven in people's faces, but you yourselves don't go in, nor do you allow in those who are trying to enter!

They do everything so that people will see them. Look at the straps with scripture verses on them which they wear on their foreheads and arms, and notice how large they are! Notice also how long are the tassels on their cloaks!

They love the best places at feasts and the reserved seats in the synagogues;

“Make certain you do not perform your religious duties in public so that people will see what you do. If you do these things publicly, you will not have any reward from your Father in heaven.

“And when you fast, do not put on a sad face as the hypocrites do. They neglect their appearance so that everyone will see that they are fasting. I assure you, they have already been paid in full.

“So when you give something to a needy person, do not make a big show of it, as the hypocrites do in the houses of worship and on the streets. They do it so that people will praise them. I assure you, they have already been paid in full.

Pray to the owner of the harvest that he will send out workers to gather in his harvest.”

And when you stand and pray, forgive anything you may have against anyone, so that your Father in heaven will forgive the wrongs you have done.”

As he taught them, he said, “Watch out for the teachers of the Law, who like to walk around in their long robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplace,

“How terrible for you Pharisees! You love the reserved seats in the synagogues and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces.

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to teach them that they should always pray and never become discouraged.

But the tax collector stood at a distance and would not even raise his face to heaven, but beat on his breast and said, ‘God, have pity on me, a sinner!’

who take advantage of widows and rob them of their homes, and then make a show of saying long prayers! Their punishment will be all the worse!”

“But how terrible for you who are rich now; you have had your easy life!

Until now you have not asked for anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your happiness may be complete.

Do all this in prayer, asking for God's help. Pray on every occasion, as the Spirit leads. For this reason keep alert and never give up; pray always for all God's people.

But the grace that God gives is even stronger. As the scripture says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
