Matthew 27:1

Good News Translation

Early in the morning all the chief priests and the elders made their plans against Jesus to put him to death.

Their kings revolt, their rulers plot together against the Lord and against the king he chose.

I hear many enemies whispering; terror is all around me. They are making plans against me, plotting to kill me.

My enemies want to kill me; they talk and plot against me.

How terrible it will be for those who lie awake and plan evil! When morning comes, as soon as they have the chance, they do the evil they planned.

“How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You lock the door to the Kingdom of heaven in people's faces, but you yourselves don't go in, nor do you allow in those who are trying to enter!

Early in the morning the chief priests met hurriedly with the elders, the teachers of the Law, and the whole Council, and made their plans. They put Jesus in chains, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

At that time some people were there who told Jesus about the Galileans whom Pilate had killed while they were offering sacrifices to God.

When day came, the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law met together, and Jesus was brought before the Council.

Early in the morning Jesus was taken from Caiaphas' house to the governor's palace. The Jewish authorities did not go inside the palace, for they wanted to keep themselves ritually clean, in order to be able to eat the Passover meal.

The apostles obeyed, and at dawn they entered the Temple and started teaching. The High Priest and his companions called together all the Jewish elders for a full meeting of the Council; then they sent orders to the prison to have the apostles brought before them.

The people of Gaza found out that Samson was there, so they surrounded the place and waited for him all night long at the city gate. They were quiet all night, thinking to themselves, “We'll wait until daybreak, and then we'll kill him.”

That same night Saul sent some men to watch David's house and kill him the next morning. Michal, David's wife, warned him, “If you don't get away tonight, tomorrow you will be dead.”
