Good News Translation

Everyone there was crying and mourning for the child. Jesus said, “Don't cry; the child is not dead—she is only sleeping!”

She died in Hebron in the land of Canaan, and Abraham mourned her death.

The king was overcome with grief. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he cried, “O my son! My son Absalom! Absalom, my son! If only I had died in your place, my son! Absalom, my son!”

“I will fill the descendants of David and the other people of Jerusalem with the spirit of mercy and the spirit of prayer. They will look at the one whom they stabbed to death, and they will mourn for him like those who mourn for an only child. They will mourn bitterly, like those who have lost their first-born son.

‘We played wedding music for you, but you wouldn't dance! We sang funeral songs, but you wouldn't cry!’

A large crowd of people followed him; among them were some women who were weeping and wailing for him.

When the people who had gathered there to watch the spectacle saw what happened, they all went back home, beating their breasts in sorrow.

When he arrived at the house, he would not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, and James, and the child's father and mother.

They all made fun of him, because they knew that she was dead.

When Jesus heard it, he said, “The final result of this sickness will not be the death of Lazarus; this has happened in order to bring glory to God, and it will be the means by which the Son of God will receive glory.”
