Abraham bowed down with his face touching the ground, but he began to laugh when he thought, “Can a man have a child when he is a hundred years old? Can Sarah have a child at ninety?”

Sarah said, “God has brought me joy and laughter. Everyone who hears about it will laugh with me.”

He satisfies those who are thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

My tears pour down like a river, because people do not obey your law.

I lift up my hands to you in prayer; like dry ground my soul is thirsty for you.

But I will see you, because I have done no wrong; and when I awake, your presence will fill me with joy.

The Lord protects and defends me; I trust in him. He gives me help and makes me glad; I praise him with joyful songs.

Happy are those whom you choose, whom you bring to live in your sanctuary. We shall be satisfied with the good things of your house, the blessings of your sacred Temple.

Here on Mount Zion the Lord Almighty will prepare a banquet for all the nations of the world—a banquet of the richest food and the finest wine.

You people who live in Jerusalem will not weep any more. The Lord is compassionate, and when you cry to him for help, he will answer you.

Rejoice with Jerusalem; be glad for her, all you that love this city! Rejoice with her now, all you that have mourned for her!

If you will not listen, I will cry in secret because of your pride; I will cry bitterly, and my tears will flow because the Lord's people have been taken away as captives.

I will refresh those who are weary and will satisfy with food everyone who is weak from hunger.

My people will return weeping, praying as I lead them back. I will guide them to streams of water, on a smooth road where they will not stumble. I am like a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my oldest son.”

I wish my head were a well of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears, so that I could cry day and night for my people who have been killed.

Some will escape to the mountains like doves frightened from the valleys. All of them will moan over their sins.

“Go through the whole city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the forehead of everyone who is distressed and troubled because of all the disgusting things being done in the city.”

“Happy are those who mourn; God will comfort them!

“Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires; God will satisfy them fully!

He has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away with empty hands.

Jesus looked at his disciples and said, “Happy are you poor; the Kingdom of God is yours!

“Happy are you when people hate you, reject you, insult you, and say that you are evil, all because of the Son of Man!

“How terrible for you who are full now; you will go hungry! “How terrible for you who laugh now; you will mourn and weep!

Jesus answered, “If you only knew what God gives and who it is that is asking you for a drink, you would ask him, and he would give you life-giving water.”

“I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “Those who come to me will never be hungry; those who believe in me will never be thirsty.

To this very moment we go hungry and thirsty; we are clothed in rags; we are beaten; we wander from place to place;

There has been work and toil; often I have gone without sleep; I have been hungry and thirsty; I have often been without enough food, shelter, or clothing.

I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

although saddened, we are always glad; we seem poor, but we make many people rich; we seem to have nothing, yet we really possess everything.

Happy are those who remain faithful under trials, because when they succeed in passing such a test, they will receive as their reward the life which God has promised to those who love him.

I heard a loud voice speaking from the throne: “Now God's home is with people! He will live with them, and they shall be his people. God himself will be with them, and he will be their God.

Never again will they hunger or thirst; neither sun nor any scorching heat will burn them,
