Some tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what are we to do?”
Why should God reward you if you love only the people who love you? Even the tax collectors do that!
But the tax collector stood at a distance and would not even raise his face to heaven, but beat on his breast and said, ‘God, have pity on me, a sinner!’
The people asked him, “What are we to do, then?”
“Don't collect more than is legal,” he told them.
All the people heard him; they and especially the tax collectors were the ones who had obeyed God's righteous demands and had been baptized by John.
When the people heard this, they were deeply troubled and said to Peter and the other apostles, “What shall we do, brothers?”
