So Herod asked Jesus many questions, but Jesus made no answer.

I will keep quiet, I will not say a word, for you are the one who made me suffer like this.

“He was treated harshly, but endured it humbly; he never said a word. Like a lamb about to be slaughtered, like a sheep about to be sheared, he never said a word.

But he said nothing in response to the accusations of the chief priests and elders.

But Jesus refused to answer a single word, with the result that the Governor was greatly surprised.

“Do not give what is holy to dogs—they will only turn and attack you. Do not throw your pearls in front of pigs—they will only trample them underfoot.

Again Jesus refused to say a word, and Pilate was amazed.

Jesus answered them, “Go and tell that fox: ‘I am driving out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I shall finish my work.’

The chief priests and the teachers of the Law stepped forward and made strong accusations against Jesus.

He went back into the palace and asked Jesus, “Where do you come from?” But Jesus did not answer.

The passage of scripture which he was reading was this: “He was like a sheep that is taken to be slaughtered, like a lamb that makes no sound when its wool is cut off. He did not say a word.

When he was insulted, he did not answer back with an insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but placed his hopes in God, the righteous Judge.
