Before all these things take place, however, you will be arrested and persecuted; you will be handed over to be tried in synagogues and be put in prison; you will be brought before kings and rulers for my sake.

All these things are like the first pains of childbirth.

The commander wanted to find out for sure what the Jews were accusing Paul of; so the next day he had Paul's chains taken off and ordered the chief priests and the whole Council to meet. Then he took Paul and made him stand before them.

They called the apostles in, had them whipped, and ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus; and then they set them free.

But Saul tried to destroy the church; going from house to house, he dragged out the believers, both men and women, and threw them into jail.

He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul! Why do you persecute me?”

For the sake of the Lord submit yourselves to every human authority: to the Emperor, who is the supreme authority,

Don't be afraid of anything you are about to suffer. Listen! The Devil will put you to the test by having some of you thrown into prison, and your troubles will last ten days. Be faithful to me, even if it means death, and I will give you life as your prize of victory.
