Tell me, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes indeed, but you saw much more than a prophet.

Herod wanted to kill him, but he was afraid of the Jewish people, because they considered John to be a prophet.

so they tried to arrest him. But they were afraid of the crowds, who considered Jesus to be a prophet.

“We must not do it during the festival,” they said, “or the people will riot.”

The Jewish leaders tried to arrest Jesus, because they knew that he had told this parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went away.

They started to argue among themselves, “What shall we say? If we say, ‘From God,’ he will say, ‘Why, then, did you not believe John?’

So they answered, “We don't know where it came from.”

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law rejected God's purpose for themselves and refused to be baptized by John.

Many people came to him. “John performed no miracles,” they said, “but everything he said about this man was true.”

So the officer went off with his men and brought the apostles back. They did not use force, however, because they were afraid that the people might stone them.
