There they put me to the test and tried me, although they had seen what I did for them.

Some Pharisees and Sadducees who came to Jesus wanted to trap him, so they asked him to perform a miracle for them, to show that God approved of him.

Jesus, however, was aware of their evil plan, and so he said, “You hypocrites! Why are you trying to trap me?

So they looked for an opportunity. They bribed some men to pretend they were sincere, and they sent them to trap Jesus with questions, so that they could hand him over to the authority and power of the Roman Governor.

Tell us, is it against our Law for us to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor, or not?”

“Show me a silver coin. Whose face and name are these on it?” “The Emperor's,” they answered.

Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Why do you think such things?

But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to the man, “Stand up and come here to the front.” The man got up and stood there.

and said, “You son of the Devil! You are the enemy of everything that is good. You are full of all kinds of evil tricks, and you always keep trying to turn the Lord's truths into lies!

We must not put the Lord to the test, as some of them did—and they were killed by snakes.

For what this world considers to be wisdom is nonsense in God's sight. As the scripture says, “God traps the wise in their cleverness”;

Then we shall no longer be children, carried by the waves and blown about by every shifting wind of the teaching of deceitful people, who lead others into error by the tricks they invent.

There is nothing that can be hid from God; everything in all creation is exposed and lies open before his eyes. And it is to him that we must all give an account of ourselves.
