When God said that he would destroy his people, his chosen servant, Moses, stood up against God and kept his anger from destroying them.

He said, “Lord, if you really are pleased with me, I ask you to go with us. These people are stubborn, but forgive our evil and our sin, and accept us as your own people.”

Then the Lord said to me, “Even if Moses and Samuel were standing here pleading with me, I would not show these people any mercy. Make them go away; make them get out of my sight.

Is evil the payment for good? Yet they have dug a pit for me to fall in. Remember how I came to you and spoke on their behalf, so that you would not deal with them in anger.

The priests, serving the Lord between the altar and the entrance of the Temple, must weep and pray: “Have pity on your people, Lord. Do not let other nations despise us and mock us by saying, ‘Where is your God?’”

So he said to his gardener, ‘Look, for three years I have been coming here looking for figs on this fig tree, and I haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it go on using up the soil?’

Then if the tree bears figs next year, so much the better; if not, then you can have it cut down.’”

It is no good for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown away. Listen, then, if you have ears!”

My friends, how I wish with all my heart that my own people might be saved! How I pray to God for them!

Perhaps I can make the people of my own race jealous, and so be able to save some of them.

The Lord is not slow to do what he has promised, as some think. Instead, he is patient with you, because he does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants all to turn away from their sins.
