Elijah walked a whole day into the wilderness. He stopped and sat down in the shade of a tree and wished he would die. “It's too much, Lord,” he prayed. “Take away my life; I might as well be dead!”

A good reputation is better than expensive perfume; and the day you die is better than the day you are born.

Keep your temper under control; it is foolish to harbor a grudge.

And the people of this evil nation who survive, who live in the places where I have scattered them, will prefer to die rather than to go on living. I, the Lord Almighty, have spoken.”

The Lord answered, “What right do you have to be angry?”

After the sun had risen, God sent a hot east wind, and Jonah was about to faint from the heat of the sun beating down on his head. So he wished he were dead. “I am better off dead than alive,” he said.

If you are going to treat me like this, have pity on me and kill me, so that I won't have to endure your cruelty any longer.”

and complained: “It would have been better if we had died in front of the Lord's Tent along with the other Israelites.

But I haven't made use of any of these rights, nor am I writing this now in order to claim such rights for myself. I would rather die first! Nobody is going to turn my rightful boast into empty words!
