“My food,” Jesus said to them, “is to obey the will of the one who sent me and to finish the work he gave me to do.

How I love to do your will, my God! I keep your teaching in my heart.”

He went a little farther on, threw himself face downward on the ground, and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering from me! Yet not what I want, but what you want.”

But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so for now. For in this way we shall do all that God requires.” So John agreed.

So Jesus got up and followed him, and his disciples went along with him.

In the same way, I tell you, the angels of God rejoice over one sinner who repents.”

He answered them, “Why did you have to look for me? Didn't you know that I had to be in my Father's house?”

I have shown your glory on earth; I have finished the work you gave me to do.

Jesus knew that by now everything had been completed; and in order to make the scripture come true, he said, “I am thirsty.”

Jesus drank the wine and said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

But he answered, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”

“I can do nothing on my own authority; I judge only as God tells me, so my judgment is right, because I am not trying to do what I want, but only what he who sent me wants.

But I have a witness on my behalf which is even greater than the witness that John gave: what I do, that is, the deeds my Father gave me to do, these speak on my behalf and show that the Father has sent me.

For the bread that God gives is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

because I have come down from heaven to do not my own will but the will of him who sent me.

And he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I always do what pleases him.”

I have shown you in all things that by working hard in this way we must help the weak, remembering the words that the Lord Jesus himself said, ‘There is more happiness in giving than in receiving.’”

Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from beginning to end. He did not give up because of the cross! On the contrary, because of the joy that was waiting for him, he thought nothing of the disgrace of dying on the cross, and he is now seated at the right side of God's throne.
