Good News Translation

The Lord is my protector; he is my strong fortress. My God is my protection, and with him I am safe. He protects me like a shield; he defends me and keeps me safe.

Lord, you are the one who protects me and gives me strength; you help me in times of trouble. Nations will come to you from the ends of the earth and say, “Our ancestors had nothing but false gods, nothing but useless idols.

Do not be a terror to me; you are my place of safety when trouble comes.

I declare in the heat of my anger that on that day there will be a severe earthquake in the land of Israel.

“My people will follow me when I roar like a lion at their enemies. They will hurry to me from the west.

Amos said, “The Lord roars from Mount Zion; his voice thunders from Jerusalem. The pastures dry up, and the grass on Mount Carmel turns brown.”

When a lion roars, who can keep from being afraid? When the Sovereign Lord speaks, who can keep from proclaiming his message?

The Lord is good; he protects his people in times of trouble; he takes care of those who turn to him.

“Before long I will shake heaven and earth, land and sea.

I will overthrow all the nations, and their treasures will be brought here, and the Temple will be filled with wealth.

I will make my people strong; they will worship and obey me.” The Lord has spoken.

“I will make the people of Judah strong; I will rescue the people of Israel. I will have compassion on them and bring them all back home. They will be as though I had never rejected them. I am the Lord their God; I will answer their prayers.

Return, you exiles who now have hope; return to your place of safety. Now I tell you that I will repay you twice over with blessing for all you have suffered.

His voice shook the earth at that time, but now he has promised, “I will once more shake not only the earth but heaven as well.”

At that very moment there was a violent earthquake; a tenth of the city was destroyed, and seven thousand people were killed. The rest of the people were terrified and praised the greatness of the God of heaven.

God's temple in heaven was opened, and the Covenant Box was seen there. Then there were flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.
