Joel 2:3

Good News Translation

Like fire they eat up the plants. In front of them the land is like the Garden of Eden, but behind them it is a barren desert. Nothing escapes them.

Lot looked around and saw that the whole Jordan Valley, all the way to Zoar, had plenty of water, like the Garden of the Lord or like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord had destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.)

Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the East, and there he put the man he had formed.

Our God is coming, but not in silence; a raging fire is in front of him, a furious storm around him.

Fire goes in front of him and burns up his enemies around him.

They covered the ground until it was black with them; they ate everything that the hail had left, including all the fruit on the trees. Not a green thing was left on any tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.

There will be so many that they will completely cover the ground. They will eat everything that the hail did not destroy, even the trees that are left.

Is this the man who destroyed cities and turned the world into a desert? Is this the man who never freed his prisoners or let them go home?”

Nimrim Brook is dry, the grass beside it has withered, and nothing green is left.

Their belongings are pounced upon and taken as loot.

“I will show compassion to Jerusalem, to all who live in her ruins. Though her land is a desert, I will make it a garden, like the garden I planted in Eden. Joy and gladness will be there, and songs of praise and thanks to me.

The wickedness of the people burns like a fire that destroys thorn bushes and thistles. It burns like a forest fire that sends up columns of smoke.

Because the Lord Almighty is angry, his punishment burns like a fire throughout the land and destroys the people, and it is each of us for ourselves.

They will devour your crops and your food; they will kill your sons and your daughters. They will slaughter your flocks and your herds and destroy your vines and fig trees. The fortified cities in which you trust will be destroyed by their army.

Everyone will talk about how this land, which was once a wilderness, has become like the Garden of Eden, and how the cities which were torn down, looted, and left in ruins, are now inhabited and fortified.

I had another vision from the Sovereign Lord. In it I saw him preparing to punish his people with fire. The fire burned up the great ocean under the earth and started to burn up the land.

I am bringing the Babylonians to power, those fierce, restless people. They are marching out across the world to conquer other lands.

Like a storm I swept them away to live in foreign countries. This good land was left a desolate place, with no one living in it.”
