Jeremiah 5:1

Good News Translation

People of Jerusalem, run through your streets! Look around! See for yourselves! Search the marketplaces! Can you find one person who does what is right and tries to be faithful to God? If you can, the Lord will forgive Jerusalem.

He answered, “Lord God Almighty, I have always served you—you alone. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed all your prophets. I am the only one left—and they are trying to kill me!”

The Lord keeps close watch over the whole world, to give strength to those whose hearts are loyal to him. You have acted foolishly, and so from now on you will always be at war.”

Help us, Lord! There is not a good person left; honest people can no longer be found.

The Lord looks down from heaven at us humans to see if there are any who are wise, any who worship him.

But they have all gone wrong; they are all equally bad. Not one of them does what is right, not a single one.

Who stood up for me against the wicked? Who took my side against the evildoers?

Everyone talks about how loyal and faithful he is, but just try to find someone who really is!

Truth, wisdom, learning, and good sense—these are worth paying for, but too valuable for you to sell.

At the entrance to the city, beside the gates, she calls:

I went wandering through the city, through its streets and alleys. I looked for the one I love. I looked, but couldn't find him.

You go to court, but you do not have justice on your side. You depend on lies to win your case. You carry out your plans to hurt others.

What is your complaint? Why have you rebelled against me?

Then all the men who knew that their wives offered sacrifices to other gods, and all the women who were standing there, including the Israelites who lived in southern Egypt—a large crowd in all—said to me,

I listened carefully, but you did not speak the truth. Not one of you has been sorry for your wickedness; not one of you has asked, ‘What have I done wrong?’ Each of you keep on going your own way, like a horse rushing into battle.

I wish I had a place to stay in the desert where I could get away from my people. They are all unfaithful, a mob of traitors.

Because of this the Lord Almighty says, “I will refine my people like metal and put them to the test. My people have done evil— what else can I do with them?

I looked for someone who could build a wall, who could stand in the places where the walls have crumbled and defend the land when my anger is about to destroy it, but I could find no one.

God answered, “The people of Israel and Judah are guilty of terrible sins. They have committed murder all over the land and have filled Jerusalem with crime. They say that I, the Lord, have abandoned their country and that I don't see them.

He said to me, “And now, Daniel, close the book and put a seal on it until the end of the world. Meanwhile, many people will waste their efforts trying to understand what is happening.”

They rush against the city; they run over the walls; they climb up the houses and go in through the windows like thieves.

People will wander from the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean and then on around from the north to the east. They will look everywhere for a message from the Lord, but they will not find it.

The first one said to the other, “Run and tell that young man with the measuring line that there are going to be so many people and so much livestock in Jerusalem that it will be too big to have walls.

The servant went back and told all this to his master. The master was furious and said to his servant, ‘Hurry out to the streets and alleys of the town, and bring back the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.’

and use every kind of wicked deceit on those who will perish. They will perish because they did not welcome and love the truth so as to be saved.
