Jeremiah 49:4

Good News Translation

Why do you unfaithful people boast? Your strength is failing. Why do you trust in your power and say that no one would dare attack you?

“Look, here is someone who did not depend on God for safety, but trusted instead in great wealth and looked for security in being wicked.”

Don't put your trust in violence; don't hope to gain anything by robbery; even if your riches increase, don't depend on them.

Wealth protects the rich; poverty destroys the poor.

You, Jerusalem, are sitting high above the valleys, like a rock rising above the plain. But I will fight against you. You say that no one can attack you or break through your defenses.

“Unfaithful people, come back; you belong to me. I will take one of you from each town and two from each clan, and I will bring you back to Mount Zion.

How long will you hesitate, faithless people? I have created something new and different, as different as a woman protecting a man.”

“Moab, you trusted in your strength and your wealth, but now even you will be conquered; your god Chemosh will go into exile, along with his princes and priests.

Your pride has deceived you. No one fears you as much as you think they do. You live on the rocky cliffs, high on top of the mountain; but even though you live as high up as an eagle, the Lord will bring you down. The Lord has spoken.”

But they did not obey or pay any attention. Instead, they did whatever their stubborn and evil hearts told them to do, and they became worse instead of better.

The Lord says, “The wise should not boast of their wisdom, nor the strong of their strength, nor the rich of their wealth.

The people of Israel are as stubborn as mules. How can I feed them like lambs in a meadow?

Command those who are rich in the things of this life not to be proud, but to place their hope, not in such an uncertain thing as riches, but in God, who generously gives us everything for our enjoyment.

Give her as much suffering and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. For she keeps telling herself: ‘Here I sit, a queen! I am no widow, I will never know grief!’
