“When you tell them all this, they will ask you why I have decided to punish them so harshly. They will ask what crime they are guilty of and what sin they have committed against the Lord their God.

The commanding officer took me aside and said, “The Lord your God threatened this land with destruction,

and now he has done what he said he would. All this happened because your people sinned against the Lord and disobeyed him.

No one anywhere, not even rulers of foreign nations, believed that any invader could enter Jerusalem's gates.

I will let a few of them survive the war, the famine, and the diseases, so that there among the nations they will realize how disgusting their actions have been and will acknowledge that I am the Lord.”

then you will know that there was good reason for everything I did.” The Sovereign Lord has spoken.

And the nations will know that the Israelites went into exile because of the sins which they committed against me. I turned away from them and let their enemies defeat them and kill them in battle.

“When I am angry and furious with you and punish you, all the nations around you will be terrified. They will look at you with disgust and make fun of you.

You, Lord, always do what is right, but we have always brought disgrace on ourselves. This is true of all of us who live in Judea and in Jerusalem and of all the Israelites whom you scattered in countries near and far because they were unfaithful to you.
