Jeremiah 1:1

Good News Translation

This book is the account of what was said by Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests of the town of Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.

Then King Solomon said to Abiathar the priest, “Go to your country home in Anathoth. You deserve to die, but I will not have you put to death now, for you were in charge of the Lord's Covenant Box while you were with my father David, and you shared in all his troubles.”

In the territory of Benjamin they were assigned the following towns with their pasture lands: Geba, Alemeth, and Anathoth. This made a total of thirteen towns for all their families to live in.

The prophet Jeremiah composed a lament for King Josiah. It has become a custom in Israel for the singers, both men and women, to use this song when they mourn for him. The song is found in the collection of laments.

He sinned against the Lord and did not listen humbly to the prophet Jeremiah, who spoke the word of the Lord.

And so what the Lord had foretold through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: “The land will lie desolate for seventy years, to make up for the Sabbath rest that has not been observed.”

In the first year that Cyrus of Persia was emperor, the Lord made what he had said through the prophet Jeremiah come true. He prompted Cyrus to issue the following command and send it out in writing to be read aloud everywhere in his empire:

This book contains the messages about Judah and Jerusalem which God revealed to Isaiah son of Amoz during the time when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah.

Shout, people of Gallim! Listen, people of Laishah! Answer, people of Anathoth!

Here is the message which God gave to Isaiah son of Amoz about Judah and Jerusalem:

The people of Anathoth wanted me killed, and they told me that they would kill me if I kept on proclaiming the Lord's message.

Why haven't you done this to Jeremiah of Anathoth, who has been speaking as a prophet to the people?

So I started to leave Jerusalem and go to the territory of Benjamin to take possession of my share of the family property.

There in Babylonia beside the Chebar River, I heard the Lord speak to me, and I felt his power.

In the first year of his reign I was studying the sacred books and thinking about the seventy years that Jerusalem would be in ruins, according to what the Lord had told the prophet Jeremiah.

These are the words of Amos, a shepherd from the town of Tekoa. Two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel, God revealed to Amos all these things about Israel.

Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, then sent a report to King Jeroboam of Israel: “Amos is plotting against you among the people. His speeches will destroy the country.

“Some say John the Baptist,” they answered. “Others say Elijah, while others say Jeremiah or some other prophet.”

In this way what the prophet Jeremiah had said came true:

Then what the prophet Jeremiah had said came true: “They took the thirty silver coins, the amount the people of Israel had agreed to pay for him,
