Isaiah 7:2

Good News Translation

When word reached the king of Judah that the armies of Syria were already in the territory of Israel, he and all his people were so terrified that they trembled like trees shaking in the wind.

You will always have descendants, and I will make your kingdom last forever. Your dynasty will never end.’”

Following the Lord's command, the prophet denounced the altar: “O altar, altar, this is what the Lord says: A child, whose name will be Josiah, will be born to the family of David. He will slaughter on you the priests serving at the pagan altars who offer sacrifices on you, and he will burn human bones on you.”

So Amaziah sent the hired troops away and told them to go home. At this they went home, bitterly angry with the people of Judah.

Four of the leading men of the Northern Kingdom, Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai also opposed the actions of the army.

I trust in the Lord for safety. How foolish of you to say to me, “Fly away like a bird to the mountains,

The wicked run when no one is chasing them, but an honest person is as brave as a lion.

The kingdom of Israel will not be jealous of Judah any more, and Judah will not be the enemy of Israel.

I will give him complete authority under the king, the descendant of David. He will have the keys of office; what he opens, no one will shut, and what he shuts, no one will open.

The people who lived there were powerless; they were frightened and stunned. They were like grass in a field or weeds growing on a roof when the hot east wind blasts them.

I will defend this city and protect it, for the sake of my own honor and because of the promise I made to my servant David.’”

Even if one person out of ten remains in the land, he too will be destroyed; he will be like the stump of an oak tree that has been cut down.” (The stump represents a new beginning for God's people.)

To that Isaiah replied, “Listen, now, descendants of King David. It's bad enough for you to wear out the patience of people—do you have to wear out God's patience too?

“The Lord is going to bring on you, on your people, and on the whole royal family, days of trouble worse than any that have come since the kingdom of Israel separated from Judah—he is going to bring the king of Assyria.

Syria, together with Israel and its king, has made a plot.

“Do not join in the schemes of the people and do not be afraid of the things that they fear.

All the people of Israel, everyone who lives in the city of Samaria, will know that he has done this. Now they are proud and arrogant. They say,

Everything that the people of Israel do from morning to night is useless and destructive. Treachery and acts of violence increase among them. They make treaties with Assyria and do business with Egypt.”

When King Herod heard about this, he was very upset, and so was everyone else in Jerusalem.
