You punished your people, Lord, and in anguish they prayed to you.

I bring him all my complaints; I tell him all my troubles.

When you said, “Come worship me,” I answered, “I will come, Lord.”

My heart breaks when I remember the past, when I went with the crowds to the house of God and led them as they walked along, a happy crowd, singing and shouting praise to God.

Call to me when trouble comes; I will save you, and you will praise me.”

When I think of God, I sigh; when I meditate, I feel discouraged.

Whenever he killed some of them, the rest would turn to him; they would repent and pray earnestly to him.

When they call to me, I will answer them; when they are in trouble, I will be with them. I will rescue them and honor them.

This is the message which he told them to give to Isaiah: “Today is a day of suffering; we are being punished and are in disgrace. We are like a woman who is ready to give birth, but is too weak to do it.

You will all be disgraced—you that say that a tree is your father and that a rock is your mother. This will happen because you turned away from me instead of turning to me. But when you are in trouble, you ask me to come and save you.

You rest secure among the cedars brought from Lebanon; but how pitiful you'll be when pains strike you, pains like those of a woman in labor.

Then you will call to me. You will come and pray to me, and I will answer you.

All through the night get up again and again to cry out to the Lord; Pour out your heart and beg him for mercy on your children— Children starving to death on every street corner!

“I will abandon my people until they have suffered enough for their sins and come looking for me. Perhaps in their suffering they will try to find me.”

They have not prayed to me sincerely, but instead they throw themselves down and wail as the heathen do. When they pray for grain and wine, they gash themselves like pagans. What rebels they are!

The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Now pray to the Lord to take these snakes away.” So Moses prayed for the people.

I rebuke and punish all whom I love. Be in earnest, then, and turn from your sins.

But the people of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned. Do whatever you like, but please, save us today.”

“No, I'm not drunk, sir,” she answered. “I haven't been drinking! I am desperate, and I have been praying, pouring out my troubles to the Lord.
