Isaiah 24:5

Good News Translation

The people have defiled the earth by breaking God's laws and by violating the covenant he made to last forever.

And that is how God will bless my descendants, because he has made an eternal covenant with me, an agreement that will not be broken, a promise that will not be changed. That is all I desire; that will be my victory, and God will surely bring it about.

So I, the Lord God of Israel, will bring such a disaster on Jerusalem and Judah that everyone who hears about it will be stunned.

I will do this to my people because they have sinned against me and have stirred up my anger from the time their ancestors came out of Egypt to this day.”

Manasseh led the people of Judah to commit even greater sins than those committed by the nations whom the Lord had driven out of the land as his people advanced.

The Lord made a covenant with Jacob, one that will last forever.

I am gripped by fear and trembling; I am overcome with horror.

I sent Assyria to attack a godless nation, people who have made me angry. I sent them to loot and steal and trample the people like dirt in the streets.”

They are always rebelling against God, always lying, always refusing to listen to the Lord's teachings.

The highways are so dangerous that no one travels on them. Treaties are broken and agreements are violated. No one is respected any more.

The Lord says, “Do you think I sent my people away like a man who divorces his wife? Where, then, are the papers of divorce? Do you think I sold you into captivity like a man who sells his children as slaves? No, you went away captive because of your sins; you were sent away because of your crimes.

And so the Lord will not let any of the young men escape, and he will not show pity on any of the widows and orphans, because all the people are godless and wicked and everything they say is evil. Yet even so the Lord's anger will not be ended, but his hand will still be stretched out to punish.

They have gone back to the sins of their ancestors, who refused to do what I said; they have worshiped other gods. Both Israel and Judah have broken the covenant that I made with their ancestors.

They will ask the way to Zion and then go in that direction. They will make an eternal covenant with me and never break it.

The Sovereign Lord says, “I will treat you the way you deserve, because you ignored your promises and broke the covenant.

But even in the desert they defied me. They broke my laws and rejected my commands, which bring life to anyone who obeys them. They completely profaned the Sabbath. I was ready to let them feel the force of my anger there in the desert and to destroy them.

I did this because they had rejected my commands, broken my laws, profaned the Sabbath, and worshiped the same idols their ancestors had served.

I will make a covenant with them that guarantees their security forever. I will establish them and increase their population, and will see to it that my Temple stands forever in their land.

He will speak against the Supreme God and oppress God's people. He will try to change their religious laws and festivals, and God's people will be under his power for three and a half years.

We did not listen to you, O Lord our God, when you told us to live according to the laws which you gave us through your servants the prophets.

“We have sinned, we have been evil, we have done wrong. We have rejected what you commanded us to do and have turned away from what you showed us was right.

“But as soon as they entered the land at Adam, they broke the covenant I had made with them.

The Lord said, “Keep all my laws and commands, so that you will not be rejected by the land of Canaan, into which I am bringing you.

Get up and go; there is no safety here any more. Your sins have doomed this place to destruction.

They both lived good lives in God's sight and obeyed fully all the Lord's laws and commands.

“The Lord's people grew rich, but rebellious; they were fat and stuffed with food. They abandoned God their Creator and rejected their mighty savior.

‘I will no longer help them,’ he said; ‘then I will see what happens to them, those stubborn, unfaithful people.

God has raised from death our Lord Jesus, who is the Great Shepherd of the sheep as the result of his blood, by which the eternal covenant is sealed. May the God of peace provide you with every good thing you need in order to do his will, and may he, through Jesus Christ, do in us what pleases him. And to Christ be the glory forever and ever! Amen.

The first covenant had rules for worship and a place made for worship as well.

If you do not keep the covenant which the Lord your God commanded you to keep and if you serve and worship other gods, then in his anger he will punish you, and soon none of you will be left in this good land that he has given you.”

So Joshua made a covenant for the people that day, and there at Shechem he gave them laws and rules to follow.
