Word reached the Assyrians that the Egyptian army, led by King Tirhakah of Ethiopia, was coming to attack them. When the emperor heard this, he sent a letter to King Hezekiah of Judah

Protect me as you would your very eyes; hide me in the shadow of your wings

How precious, O God, is your constant love! We find protection under the shadow of your wings.

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful, because I come to you for safety. In the shadow of your wings I find protection until the raging storms are over.

Let me live in your sanctuary all my life; let me find safety under your wings.

He will cover you with his wings; you will be safe in his care; his faithfulness will protect and defend you.

Those who go to Egypt for help are doomed! They are relying on Egypt's vast military strength—horses, chariots, and soldiers. But they do not rely on the Lord, the holy God of Israel, or ask him for help.

The Lord says to Israel, “The wealth of Egypt and Ethiopia will be yours, and the tall men of Seba will be your slaves; they will follow you in chains. They will bow down to you and confess, ‘God is with you—he alone is God.

“When that day comes and Egypt is destroyed, I will send messengers in ships to arouse the unsuspecting people of Ethiopia, and they will be terrified. That day is coming!”

The Lord will also put the people of Ethiopia to death.

Even from distant Ethiopia my scattered people will bring offerings to me.

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and stone the messengers God has sent you! How many times I wanted to put my arms around all your people, just as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would not let me!

May the Lord reward you for what you have done. May you have a full reward from the Lord God of Israel, to whom you have come for protection!”
