After Solomon had finished praying to the Lord, he stood up in front of the altar, where he had been kneeling with uplifted hands.

When the time came for the evening sacrifice, I got up from where I had been grieving, and still wearing my torn clothes, I knelt in prayer and stretched out my hands to the Lord my God.

Terror will strike like a sudden flood; a wind in the night will blow them away;

It is useless for them to cry out; Almighty God does not see or hear them.

Raise your hands in prayer in the Temple, and praise the Lord!

Hear my prayer, O God; don't turn away from my plea!

If I had ignored my sins, the Lord would not have listened to me.

Then you will call for wisdom, but I will not answer. You may look for me everywhere, but you will not find me.

By his power the Lord will judge and purify the nation and wash away the guilt of Jerusalem and the blood that has been shed there.

The God of Israel, who saves his people, is a God who conceals himself.

Your fasting makes you violent, and you quarrel and fight. Do you think this kind of fasting will make me listen to your prayers?

Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor. Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your own relatives.

No one turns to you in prayer; no one goes to you for help. You have hidden yourself from us and have abandoned us because of our sins.

The Lord has hidden himself from his people, but I trust him and place my hope in him.

So now I, the Lord, warn them that I am going to bring destruction on them, and they will not escape. And when they cry out to me for help, I will not listen to them.

Even if they fast, I will not listen to their cry for help; and even if they offer me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not be pleased with them. Instead, I will kill them in war and by starvation and disease.”

I heard a cry, like a woman in labor, a scream like a woman bearing her first child. It was the cry of Jerusalem gasping for breath, stretching out her hand and saying, “I am doomed! They are coming to kill me!”

You have murdered so many people here in the city that the streets are full of corpses.

“Mortal man,” he said, “these men have given their hearts to idols and are letting idols lead them into sin. Do they think I will give them an answer?

And the nations will know that the Israelites went into exile because of the sins which they committed against me. I turned away from them and let their enemies defeat them and kill them in battle.

They take their sheep and cattle to offer as sacrifices to the Lord, but it does them no good. They cannot find him, for he has left them.

The time is coming when you will cry out to the Lord, but he will not answer you. He will not listen to your prayers, for you have done evil.

Because they did not listen when I spoke, I did not answer when they prayed.

“How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You lock the door to the Kingdom of heaven in people's faces, but you yourselves don't go in, nor do you allow in those who are trying to enter!

“When you pray, do not use a lot of meaningless words, as the pagans do, who think that their gods will hear them because their prayers are long.

We know that God does not listen to sinners; he does listen to people who respect him and do what he wants them to do.

In every church service I want the men to pray, men who are dedicated to God and can lift up their hands in prayer without anger or argument.
