When a nation sins, it will have one ruler after another. But a nation will be strong and endure when it has intelligent, sensible leaders.

These people will soon be saying, “We have no king because we did not fear the Lord. But what could a king do for us anyway?”

Their king will be carried off, like a chip of wood on water.

In just this way the people of Israel will have to live for a long time without kings or leaders, without sacrifices or sacred stone pillars, without idols or images to use for divination.

“My people chose kings, but they did it on their own. They appointed leaders, but without my approval. They took their silver and gold and made idols—for their own destruction.

Samuel called the people together for a religious gathering at Mizpah

I am your God, the one who rescues you from all your troubles and difficulties, but today you have rejected me and have asked me to give you a king. Very well, then, gather yourselves before the Lord by tribes and by clans.’”

Then Samuel said to the people of Israel, “I have done what you asked me to do. I have given you a king to rule you,

“Now here is the king you chose; you asked for him, and now the Lord has given him to you.

“I will not go back with you,” Samuel answered. “You rejected the Lord's command, and he has rejected you as king of Israel.”

The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you go on grieving over Saul? I have rejected him as king of Israel. But now get some olive oil and go to Bethlehem, to a man named Jesse, because I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”
