“You hoped for large harvests, but they turned out to be small. And when you brought the harvest home, I blew it away. Why did I do that? Because my Temple lies in ruins while every one of you is busy working on your own house.

The grapevines growing on five acres of land will yield only five gallons of wine. Ten bushels of seed will produce only one bushel of grain.”

My people planted wheat, but gathered weeds; they have worked hard, but got nothing for it. Because of my fierce anger their crops have failed.”

You will feel my anger when I turn it loose on you like a blazing fire. And I will hand you over to brutal men, experts at destruction.

But in the fifth year you may eat the fruit. If you do all this, your trees will bear more fruit. I am the Lord your God.

“My people, why should you be living in well-built houses while my Temple lies in ruins?

You have planted much grain, but have harvested very little. You have food to eat, but not enough to make you full. You have wine to drink, but not enough to get drunk on! You have clothing, but not enough to keep you warm. And workers cannot earn enough to live on.

You must honor me by what you do. If you will not listen to what I say, then I will bring a curse on you. I will put a curse on the things you receive for your support. In fact, I have already put a curse on them, because you do not take my command seriously.

“You will plant plenty of seed, but reap only a small harvest, because the locusts will eat your crops.

But this is what I have against you: you do not love me now as you did at first.

I rebuke and punish all whom I love. Be in earnest, then, and turn from your sins.
